Issue 504 – ‘Dobby’ turns 100 years old
A celebration was held last Sunday at Firlawn House Nursing Home, in Holt, when resident Bill Dobson turned 100 years old.
Bill was born in Wales the same year that King George V took to the throne and Mother Teresa was born. A life-long fan of motor racing, Bill spent his younger days working as a car engineer in London.
During the Second World War, he worked as an agent for the British Government, liaising between the British and American Forces.
He is known affectionately as ‘Dobby’ around Firlawn House and is popular amongst the residents and carers. Bill has been a widower for 10 years after his wife Kate died.
Melksham man, Leonard Webb, became friends with Bill 20 years ago when they lived next door to each other. He told Melksham News, “Dobby is a good tempered cheerful fellow. After the war, he became fairly well known in the field of rally driving.
“His wife was a well placed civil servant - her job was to receive visitors from other countries.
“Dobby has worked for a number of well known motor companies - he was extremely well placed in the trade.
“I visit him as often as I can as I am now the only friend he has. Our great bind is that we are both Welsh boys.”
Sue Timbrell, senior care assistant at Firlawn House said, “Dobby is always full of beans and greets you with a big beaming smile. He is a really lovely man and we’re all so happy to have joined him in celebrating his 100th birthday.”
